According to determination theory, a person has three basic psychological needs: the need for autonomy, the need for social connectedness and the need for competence. When these three needs are met, it has a positive impact on the well-being of the individual. Not surprisingly, in a work environment where employees experience these three basic needs optimally, employees experience relatively less absenteeism and more job satisfaction.
Investing in satisfied employees is no luxury, and we find in practice that this topic is becoming increasingly important in business. Creating a work environment where there is space and attention for employees provides you as an organization with numerous benefits. Not only do work happiness and sustainable employability of your employees grow, but you will also see the financial benefits of this within your organization.
According to health and safety services and employers, workload is one of the biggest risks within companies. Absenteeism costs amount to billions of dollars annually. To address burnout symptoms, companies are advised to establish a point of contact, provide more appropriate work and increase employee autonomy.
In addition, Nationale-Nederlanden revealed in a survey yesterday that this year’s sick leave rate is expected to exceed 5% for the first time in 20 years. This study also shows that work-related psychological complaints are one of the main causes of long absences from work. In order to prevent the loss of currently healthy employees, it is important for employers to increase their commitment to preventive measures.
For most HR professionals, this is not news and, sadly, they also know that this problem has been developing this way in the Netherlands for years. However, in practice, it is often not easy for organizations to adequately address precisely this problem. It requires investment, diligence and expertise. Counseling during illness is customized, but not the only part of a successful approach. Several issues surrounding an individual which are inseparable and interrelated ensure that someone is in the right workplace, does not drop out and enjoys going to work! An integrated approach provides direction and control over all facets of employability. Smart organizations understand this principle and therefore put employee happiness and sustainable employability high on their priority list.
Complex? No, not as far as we are concerned. Ask yourself:
- Do you have visibility into your employees’ risk of attrition?
- How current is your RI&E?
- What are you doing about prevention?
- How do you handle a sick call?
- What parties are you working with?
- And finally, what is your vision regarding sustainable employability?
