Work equipment registration requirement: from Jan. 1, 2023, enforcement for compliance

As of Jan. 1, 2022, there is already a registration requirement for most agricultural vehicles and work equipment. Formally, without that license plate, you were not allowed on the road as of Jan. 1, 2022. However, this rule was not really enforced. This will change as of Jan. 1, 2023.

Key facts at a glance

Below we briefly summarize the most important facts and misunderstandings regarding this license plate requirement:

  1. Check your own vehicle(s) via the selection tool at rdw.nl/registration to be sure if a registration requirement exists.
  2. Even if the work equipment drives only on your own property or on company property accessible to others, there is a registration requirement. This is then considered a public road.
  3. Once you have received the registration certificate and report code, please pass it on to us (your insurance advisor) so we can report it to insurer. The insurer takes care of registering the insurance with the National Road Administration (RDW).
  4. From Jan. 1, 2022, it will only be possible to register your vehicle after inspection at one of 16 inspection stations.

What can you expect from the RDW?

There is a lot of information on the RDW website: https://www.rdw.nl/particulier/voertuigen/landbouwvoertuig/nieuwe-regels-voor-landbouwvoertuigen/registreren-landbouwvoertuigen

Since last September 1, the National Road Transport Agency (RDW) has been approaching owners of (agricultural) construction vehicles who do not (yet) have insurance. The RDW, meanwhile, alerted 80,000 owners to the insurance requirement.

Is a vehicle not registered as third-party insured after Jan. 1, 2023? Then the owner can expect a fine of EUR 400.
